For over six decades, Jack Levine (born 1915), one of the foremost social realist artists of his generation, has been a major proponent of representational form and moral content in American art. Levine consciously embodies a living link to the traditions represented by the European “Old Masters,” an artistic debt openly acknowledged in his painting Six Masters: A Devotion (1963), which depicts Goya, Velasquez, Rembrandt, Titian, Rubens, and El Greco. Drawing inspiration from Goya, as well as Honoré Daumier, and George Grosz, Levine also has been a perceptive critic and satirist, recording societal ills, and human foibles and failings, with uncompromising candor. Addressing the pessimistic perspective that characterizes many of his major works, Levine has observed: “I am primarily concerned with the condition of man. The satirical direction I have chosen is an indication of my disappointment in man, which is the opposite way of saying that I have high expectations of the human race.”

11:36 AMé de um realismo que impressiona, pelo lado caricatural do qual sabe tão bem tirar partido. De alguma forma em alguns momentos me faz lembrar da Paula Rego.

Pensei o mesmo, Lady, quando estava a colocar as pinturas. Embora as figuras não sejam tão definidas como em Paula Rego, a composição dos quadros e a deformação dos corpos é similar. Adoro este pintor e daria o que tenho para ter um original dele. Nunca os vi ao vivo e a cores mas creio que devem ser esplendorosos.
